A New Era of Beer
DCSL Breweries Lanka Limited results from the successful acquisition of HEINEKEN Lanka Limited thereby establishing it as a fully owned subsidiary of Distilleries Company of Sri Lanka PLC (DCSL).
DCSL has experienced unparalleled growth in the last three decades. It is now a Fitch triple-A rated company, been included in Forbes’ Best Under a Billion list 3 times and has consistently been named in the Business Today Magazine as one of the Top Ten Corporates since the inception of this index until the Company became a subsidiary of Melstacorp PLC in 2016. Melstacorp is also rated triple – A by Fitch.
Under its new identity as DCSL Breweries Lanka Ltd. (DBL), this pivotal development represents a significant milestone in DCSL’s expansion strategy and for the continuous development of internationally renowned brands owned by HEINEKEN in the Sri Lankan market. This acquisition reinforces DCSL’s and DBL’s stature as prominent entities within the beverage industry.
Today, DCSL Breweries Lanka operates in two locations, a head office in the heart of Colombo along with a brewery in Mawathagama with over 260 people in its direct employment. DCSL Breweries Lanka will continue to brew and distribute HEINEKEN’s iconic international premium portfolio, which includes renowned brands such as Heineken®, Tiger and Anchor along with our local jewel Bison.
The integration of DCSL PLC and HEINEKEN Lanka Ltd. empowers DCSL Breweries Lanka Ltd. to provide our valued clientele with a comprehensive selection of alcoholic beverages, further enhancing our offerings and ensuring exceptional satisfaction for our customers.
Our History
1997
United Breweries Limited was established as a joint venture between Mauritius Breweries Limited Offshore, a fully owned subsidiary of Phoenix Beverages Limited, the A.P. Casie Chitty Company Limited and Hilary Company Limited.
1998
United Breweries Limited commences operations at its Brewery in Mawathagama (Kurunegala).
2005
Singapore-based Asia Pacific Breweries Limited (APB) acquires United Breweries transforming it into Asia Pacific Brewery (Lanka) Limited which fast becomes one of the key players in the Sri Lankan beer market.
2012
HEINEKEN Group fully acquires Asia Pacific Brewery (Lanka) Limited, integrating the Sri Lanka business to the HEINEKEN Group.
2016
Sri Lankans are introduced to the premium quality and distinct taste of Heineken®.
2017
Asia Pacific Brewery (Lanka) Ltd changes its corporate identity to HEINEKEN Lanka Limited reflecting its place in the global HEINEKEN Group. HEINEKEN Lanka Limited becomes a fully owned subsidiary of the HEINEKEN Company and the second largest manufacturer and distributor of beer in Sri Lanka.
2021
HEINEKEN Lanka invests in modern brewing facilities at its Mawathagama Brewery announcing the commencement of local brewing operations of its flagship beer brand – Heineken® in Sri Lanka. With this, Sri Lanka joins an elite group of 60 countries that have the license and approvals from its global parent for local manufacturing operations.
2023
Leading local spirits maker Distilleries Company of Sri Lanka PLC (DCSL), a subsidiary of Melstacorp PLC, enters into a Sales and Purchase Agreement with HEINEKEN International B.V. to acquire all its shares of HEINEKEN Lanka Limited and operate in Sri Lanka under a trademark license agreement for HEINEKEN’s international brand portfolio comprising Heineken®, Tiger and Anchor.
2024
With this acquisition, HEINEKEN Lanka Ltd., changes its name to DCSL Breweries Lanka Ltd. to reflect the new ownership.
